COMMUNITY

Our responsibilities towards both the community and environments in which we operate are important to us. The following provides an overview of Partners Nations, pillars and approach to community engagement.

OUR FOUR PILLARS

The purpose of our pillars is to evaluate the impact of our Ontario Mining contributions, using indicators of success against each pillar’s goal.

Improving access to health and wellbeing services, while enhancing social relationships, diversity and social inclusion

Improving education and training pathways to generate future opportunities

Supporting community outreach to build stronger people, places and opportunities, including recreation and amateur sports

Supporting the environment, biodiversity and restoration and promoting responsible custodianship of the landscape

FIRST NATIONS PARTNERS

INDIGENOUS RELATIONS

Fostering positive and collaborative relationships with local Indigenous Peoples is essential for building the foundations of a successful project and ensuring mutual benefits for all. Agnico Eagle supports the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and applies its principles, norms and standards through our Indigenous Peoples Engagement Policy. Our approach focuses on establishing mutually beneficial, cooperative and productive relationships.

In 2022, we continued to build early meaningful engagement, respectful relationships, and obtained the Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) of Indigenous Peoples before proceeding with economic development projects. We also continued to engage and collaborate with local indigenous communities impacted and potentially impacted by existing projects.

Developing positive and cooperative relationships with local communities is essential for building the foundations of a successful project and delivering socio-economic benefits as well as a positive legacy for host communities.

As early as possible, we engage and partner with local stakeholders and Indigenous groups to assess the levels of social acceptability and potential impacts of the project within the host community.  This allows us to mitigate potential negative impacts, and discover opportunities for collaboration, avoiding potential conflict and building community relationships on a foundation of trust and transparency.

We understand that we must continuously earn the trust of the local community by being a reliable partner and good neighbour, and by being inclusive, open and transparent in our engagements.  Therefore, we take a life cycle approach to our relationship and initiatives with local communities and Indigenous Peoples, as examples show in the following figure.

Agnico Eagle Ontario Region
Good Neighbour Guide

Agnico Eagle Mines is dedicated to fostering respectful, inclusive, and transparent relationships with all Indigenous Nations, groups, and individuals connected to our operations and projects throughout the Ontario Region.

We recognize and value the perspectives of Rightsholders, defined as Indigenous Nations holding constitutionally protected, asserted, or proven Aboriginal and/or Treaty rights. We also recognize and value the perspectives of Communities of Interest (COIs), which includes individuals or groups with an interest in our Ontario Region operations, a stake in their outcomes, or knowledge to contribute.

Potential Benefits and Topics of Interest

We are committed to engaging on a wide range of potential benefits that may arise from our presence and activities in the region, including:

  • Employment and training opportunities that support local workforce development and long-term career pathways;
  • Contracting and business opportunities for local suppliers, service providers, and entrepreneurs;
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives that promote equitable participation and representation across all aspects of our operations;
  • Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and Nations, including adherence to Agnico Eagle’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP); and
  • Community contributions and donations that support local programs and initiatives.

In addition to potential benefits, we are committed to engaging on key topics of interest that reflect community concerns, expectations, and areas of shared responsibility, such as:

  • Environmental protection and monitoring;
  • Health and safety commitments;
  • Mine closure and reclamation;
  • Noise, vibration, and air quality;
  • Permitting and regulatory compliance; and
  • Water management related to operations.

Good Neighbour Survey and Open Houses

To maintain open and respectful communication with our neighbours, Agnico Eagle Mines conducts an annual Good Neighbour Survey to better understand community interests and priorities. Beginning in 2026, we will also host annual community open houses in three locations in the Ontario Region, expanding on the successful model used for the annual Upper Beaver Open House held in the Township of Gauthier. These open houses will provide opportunities to share updates, gather feedback, and strengthen relationships with COIs and Rightsholders.

Equity-Centred Engagement

Agnico Eagle is committed to ensuring that all engagement processes are respectful, inclusive, and accessible. We recognize that individuals may have different communication needs, preferences, or barriers to participation, and will adapt our approach as needed to support meaningful and equitable engagement.

When a COI self-identifies as under-represented or marginalized, we will consider additional accommodations to ensure their experience is equitable and culturally appropriate. These may include enhanced accessibility, flexible communication, or other tailored practices.

Confidentiality Commitment

Agnico Eagle documents engagement activities to support meaningful and timely follow-up actions and to meet regulatory requirements. This may include the preparation of meeting summaries and the use of Borealis, a Canadian data management platform. If individuals request that their interactions not be documented, or wish to remain confidential for any reason, Agnico Eagle will respect that request.

In such cases, we will work collaboratively with the individual to develop a tailored confidentiality process that aligns with their privacy preferences and legal rights. This ensures that their information is handled with care, discretion, and in accordance with applicable privacy standards.

Agnico Eagle Mines is committed to upholding the dignity, autonomy, and meaningful participation of all stakeholders and Rightsholders. We tailor our engagement protocols to reflect the unique context and preferences of each COI and Rightsholder. To initiate customized engagement protocols, please contact our Ontario Region Community Relations Division via the Contact Us feature of the Ontario Agnico Eagle website.
